SOC 206: SOC POP CULTURE

This course offers a sociological analysis of contemporary popular culture and its changing role in society. It explores popular culture's interrelationship with institutions such as the economy, politics, education, and technology, while analyzing inequalities of class, race, gender, and sexuality. This course also examines how different audiences use and produce cultural objects and social media, interrogates flows of cultural goods through mass media, evaluates tensions among creators and commercial forces, and interprets how popular culture is used as a platform by both powerful and marginalized social groups. Available for General Education, Area 4 Social and Behavioral Sciences.
