Prerequisite: Completion of the lower division writing requirement. This course offers a sociological description and analysis of contemporary and changing racial and ethnic identities, cultures, and lifestyles in American society. It emphasizes the role of race and ethnicity in shaping institutional life, including education, employment, the criminal justice system, and housing. In addition to examining ethnic cultures and lifestyles by social class, family structure, gender roles, sexual orientation, and age, the course explores the impacts of social movements and popular culture on racial and ethnic dynamics.
