PHIL 009: BIOMEDICAL ETHICS

4 Units, Lecture, 3 hours; discussion, 1 hour. Prerequisite(s): none. Introduces the major camps in ethical theory: utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, and feminist ethics. Applies these theories to critically examine contemporary issues in bioethics. Includes stem-cell research, assisted reproductive technologies, contract gestation, maternal-fetal conflicts, genetic and pharmacological enhancements, access to health care, and physician-assisted suicide. Credit is awarded for one of the following PHIL 009 or PHIL 009H.
