Examines maternal care in the U.S. and worldwide. Analyzes childbirth as a social practice and a cultural construction. Topics include maternal mortality and morbidity, childbirth in different cultures, medicalization of childbirth, alternative and natural birth movements, media representations of childbirth, birth stories, and attitudes toward cesarean section.
