Examines the law and policy of how nature's resources are used-- from fores ts and fisheries to biodiversity and parks. Special attention is paid to th e historical and political origins of humanity's competing ideas of why nat ure matters and what should be done with it, from economically productive u se and outdoor recreation to preserving the natural world for its own sake. The complicated interplay of science and law is also examined.
