ESM 512: ETHICS & CONDUCT

Introduces incoming Bren PhD students to the ethical principles that apply to scientists. Discusses key concepts and cases including: (1) Brief histor y and basic terms and concepts; (2) Plagiarism and authorship; (3) Falsific ation and fabrication; (4) Peer-review process; (5) Human subjects and bioe thics; (6) Conflict of interest; (7) Policies and protocols to prevent misc onduct; and (8) Miscellaneous issues in the academic environment. We will r eview historical cases of research misconduct and analyze recent retraction cases.
