FAMST 188MT: MUSICAL THEATRE

An introduction to the unique techniques and challenges of writing for musi cal theatre, focusing on the collaborative art of telling a story through m usic, lyrics, script (the “book”) and dance. A historical overview of music al theater from early operetta to contemporary Broadway and West End hits, will inform our exploration of both the “show” and the “business.” Students will learn foundational vocabulary, analyze how songs advance character an d plot, and develop scenes and songs in weekly, hands-on exercises, culmina ting in a workshop presentation of original works-in-progress.
