This course surveys the leading issues in North American life from colonial times to the early 19th century. It examines European colonialism, the exp ansion of slavery, the transition to capitalism, and the emergence of hiera rchies of race, class, and gender within an Atlantic and hemispheric contex t. Emphasis is placed on the interactions among Indigenous peoples, Europea n colonizers, and enslaved and free Africans. Features discussion sections.
