MATRL 286QQ: QTM PHNM N MESO MAT

University of California, Santa Barbara

This course develops the physical principles behind quantum behavior in nan oscale solid-state devices where phase coherence, confinement, and interact ions dominate transport. Topics include quantum point contacts (quantized c onductance and shot noise), quantum dots (Coulomb blockade, single-electron tunneling, and Kondo physics), and focus on real materials like topologica l insulators and superconductors. The course also introduces superconductin g hybrid structures and Josephson junction physics, emphasizing how mesosco pic effects emerge in real devices and measurement setups. Students will co nnect simplified theoretical models to experimental signatures commonly obs erved in low-temperature nanoelectronics.
