ANTH 110H

Property/Housing/Rent

5credits
About this course

Takes an anthropological approach to property, housing, home, and rent as social relations with particular cultural histories. Focuses on the housing crisis, particularly in California, beyond issues of price and affordability, to address the meanings, values, ideologies, and practices that shape housing accessibility and discrimination. Seeks to defamiliarize taken-for-granted understandings of property, home, and rent through comparative analysis across different societies. Students reflect on their own beliefs, values, and aspirations regarding property, home, and housing and to relate these culturally informed values to think through solutions to the housing crisis.
