Through workshops and fieldwork exercises, students learn how to use immersive, sensory observation and regular writing practice to develop a research question and design a research project, practice ethnographic methods (which may include archival research), write up their findings in a synthetic essay, and present their research findings to an audience. The course covers topics such as ethics, reflexivity, accountability, bias, and positionality. Students create a portfolio of their work across the five weeks.
