ARTG 50: Play Radical Endeavor

University of California, Santa Cruz

Foundational course in game design. Re-introduces students to play as an expressive form that reaches across many mediums of cultural expression. Students study, experience, and design play-things, performances and interactive experiments, culminating in showing up to play through a final Playfaire, where, as a collective, they bring their creative tools to engage in cross-disciplinary play-space designed by upper-division AGPM students. Course continues the long tradition of play using figures such as the jester and the clown to call into question social norms and power structures. Students also engage in critiques of their creative choices along the way.
