OCEA 251: AquaBiogeochem Fld/Lab

University of California, Santa Cruz

Introduction to aquatic biogeochemistry field and lab techniques used to investigate nutrient cycling. Students learn how to collect field samples for biogeochemistry including particulate organic matter, dissolved organic matter, and plankton counts at Younger Lagoon. Students collect water samples for surface particulate organic matter and stoichiometric ratios alongside environmental data to evaluate the patterns, variation, and controls of biotic and abiotic factors. In the lab students process samples to address thoughtful research questions. Students gain hands-on experience processing biogeochemical processes over seasonal and interannual cycles.
