Study of values and make-up of American pluralistic society in historical and contemporary context. Focus on the understanding of African American values and the role of ethnicity and race. Section information text: Artificial intelligence and algorithmic systems increasingly shape how decisions are made yet these systems are not neutral. They are built on data, histories, and assumptions that reflect broader social structures. This course examines artificial intelligence and data-driven decision-making through the lens of the African American experience emphasizing critical analysis and applied understanding rather than coding. Students will explore how technologies from redlining maps to predictive algorithms have historically shaped racial inequality, and how contemporary AI systems can both reproduce and challenge those patterns. Students will also examine the role of Black technologists, policymakers, and community leaders in shaping more equitable technological futures.
