AMST 2050: Topics in AMST: Wilderness and Recreation in America
University of North Carolina, Charlotte
An introduction to the interdisciplinary approach focusing on aspects of American culture and society. Section information text: Have you ever dreamed of driving across the country towing an Airstream? Find yourself scrolling through #vanlife on TikTok? Constantly reading your favorite climber’s conservation posts on Instagram? This course is an interdisciplinary approach to enjoying and protecting America’s natural places. We’ll read about and discuss how the US codified “wilderness” and created a system of public lands with the best intentions. We’ll consider all stakeholders, too—from corporations to car-campers and indigenous peoples to lobbyists. We’ll even examine the effects of the outdoor recreation economy on current conservation strategies. National Parks—good or bad? Let’s explore.
