ANTH 3020: Topics in Cultural Anthropology: Latines in the Carolinas and the "New South"

Specialized topics in Cultural Anthropology.� Examples include: Contemporary Mayan Religion, Pastoralism in Central Asia. Section information text: In the last 30 years, the Latino population in North Carolina increased dramatically; the latest 2020 decennial census shows that over 1 million Latines live in the state, making up over 10% of the population. This course will provide a comprehensive overview of this emerging population as well as critically engage with topics related to immigration, governance, integration, Latine identity, and labor. Through readings and guest lectures from members of the Charlotte Latine community, students will explore the historical development of NC Latine communities and the current challenges they face. Students will read and respond to texts (government reports, scholarly articles, etc.) on the history of Latine migration and community formation in North Carolina as well as the “New South”.
