Study of linguistic theories of how and when human language developed, with attention to parallel work in anthropology, archeology, and psychology. Section information text: An interdisciplinary approach to communication systems among hypersocial species and the emergence of human language(s). The course will take a two-pronged approach, reviewing both the scientific record (ranging from paleolinguistics to neurolinguistics) and cultural/philosophical efforts of defining human language in qualitative contrast to animal communication.
