ENGL 4750: English Honors Seminar: Magical Realism

In-depth study of a selected topic in English Studies. �Topics and course content vary according to the interests and expertise of the faculty. Section information text: What is “magical realism”? Is it the disruption of realism with magic? Or a blending of the ordinary with the extraordinary? Is it a genre or a style? This course will address these questions by exploring the historical, the global, and the contemporary uses of magical realism through an interdisciplinary study of short stories, novels, film, critical essays, and creative writing exercises that resonate with the term. We will examine this narrative mode’s origins, aesthetic influences, and cultural significance while considering the rise of its popularity.
