HIST 2001: Topics in European History: War, Culture, and Society from Renaissance to Napoleon

Discussion of a topic in European History. Section information text: Before the age of total war that began with the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon, Europe was afflicted by centuries of near constant warfare. This course will investigate the interaction of warfare and socio-cultural change in Europe from the end of the Middle Ages until the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century. We will explore warfare as it relates to the emergence of such “modern” categories as the nation state, national identity, and global empire. Other themes we will explore are: religious war, the influences of war on philosophy, the experiences of women in war, the demographic and civilian effects of war, and the cultural practices of war itself. The main goal of the course is for students to take away a solid understanding of the impact of historical warfare on various aspects of the “modern” world.
