INTL 3000: Topics in International Studies: Sports and Globalization

Analysis of a selected topic related to international studies. The particular topic of the course may vary from semester to semester. Section information text: This course examines the political, economic, and socio-cultural dimensions of processes of globalization and their interaction with international sports. The course considers how sports are both important elements of cultural and national identity and economically significant. Topics include international ownership of sports teams and their relationship with fan groups; racial conflict and ethnic tensions, and gender discrimination and women's rights. Of primary interest will be the policies, actions, and influence of the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as well as other international sports governing bodies. Sports are used as a series of case studies to understand globalization. Topics include: nationalism; politics and ideology; colonialism, imperialism, and neocolonialism; and the consequences of global capitalism on sports.
