LTAM 4030: Topics in Latin American Humanities: Contemp Latin American Fiction

Special topics in Latin American humanities. Courses focus on the artists, philosophers, writers, and other cultural production and cultural producers�from Latin America. Section information text: Latin American literature has played a particularly important role in world literature for more than a century. Many authors from around the globe have claimed a variety of Latin American authors as inspiration not only for their own work but also as a force pushing the limits of fiction writing to new horizons. This course will explore a variety of recent works of fiction by Latin American authors with an emphasis on the novel. We will consider contextual elements such as key historical events and social questions while paying close attention to how the novels build their own worlds. Highly innovative and entertaining, the contemporary Latin American novel is gaining renewed attention especially due to its cultivation of elements such as the weird and strange, which will feature prominently in the course. No prior experience reading Latin American literature is required.
