SPAN 3050: Topics in Lang-Lit-Cult: Romantic Comedies of Latin America

University of North Carolina, Charlotte

Study of a particular facet of the Spanish language, culture, or literature at the 3000 level not covered by other SPAN courses. Section information text: No genre of cinema has achieved greater commercial success in Latin America than the romantic comedy. Relatively inexpensive to produce and hugely popular, they make millions of dollars every year at the domestic box office and, at times, even become lasting cultural phenomena. Given the extent of their popularity, romantic comedies also often become especially useful for evaluating popular attitudes about gender and sexuality. In this course, we will watch multiple romantic comedies. As we do so, we will ask ourselves what these films say about popular stereotypes and ideologies about gender in Latin America.
