Prerequisite: PSY 150; Completion of the lower division writing requirement. Corequisite: Concurrent Enrollment in or Prior Completion of PSY 301. Positive Psychology is the scientific study of optimal human functioning that aims to discover and promote the factors that allow individuals and communities to thrive. Traditionally, the field of psychology has focused its efforts in understanding "what is wrong with individuals" and "what are individuals' shortcomings"? Although the study of human shortcomings is extremely important to society (e.g., why do some individuals become depressed?), less focus has been on understanding individuals' potential (e.g., why are some individuals happier than others?). Similar to other subdisciplines of psychology, many of the theories and research may be applied to everyday life, but caution that positive psychology is not self-help. This course is designed to provide an overview of the theories and scientific findings relating to the scientific study of human potential and well-being.
