The past is never very far away. Indeed, remembering is an important part o f social life that generates passionate debate in politics and the media. I n this class, we look at what is collective about collective memory, invest igate the politics of who gets remembered and why, look at the role of memo ry in the creation of the nation and identity, and examine “difficult” past s and how we atone for them (or not).
