ENGL 5074: Topics in Children's/YA Literature, Culture, and/or Media: Digital Narratives for Young People

Study of works for children and/or young adults such as literature and/or other media, including film, television, digital narratives, games, and/or comics. Section information text: In this course, we’ll examine the numerous ways in which texts can travel from the analog "real" world to the digital one and back again... and how children’s and YA literature can serve as a guidebook for such a journey. We will also consider the ethical, social, and artistic ramifications of a digital universe that now regularly includes "AI" generated material. Expect to read, write, discuss, and present on all kinds of narratives ranging from Romeo and Juliet, Ivanhoe, Alice in Wonderland, The Hunger Games, the Percy Jackson series, and films like The Matrix (1999) to social media story-telling, reality tv, video games, discographies by popular musical artists, web-comics, and fan fiction via all types of interfaces (i.e. dead-tree books as well as your computer/television/phone screens), while learning to pitch your own concepts for creative projects that digitally adapt favorite/significant print texts from your own childhood and adolescence for new audiences to discover and enjoy. For graduate students, fulfills children’s literature requirement for children’s literature concentration; fulfills literature course requirement for applied linguistics, creative writing, rhetoric/composition, and literature concentrations
