GEOG 2111: Social inequality

Introduction to social, political, economic and cultural forces shaping urban communities. The role of race, class and gender relations and the processes through which community intervention occurs at the local level is explored.� Emphasis is on the role of participatory planning, advocacy planning, community organizing and community development.� Also explored are community building and social change by focusing on the interplay between local residents, leaders and institutions, through team projects, individual assignments and community service activities.� Students participate in a community project that requires them to visit Charlotte neighborhoods several times over the course of the semester, requiring out-of-class time to visit the neighborhoods to collect data in teams of 2-4 students.
