HIST 2206: Colonial Latin America

A survey of major political, economic, and cultural developments from earliest times to 1826. Meets non-Western requirement. Section information text: This course surveys the history of Colonial Latin America from before European contact through to the independence of the mainland Spanish and Portuguese colonies. We will examine several of the major pre-contact civilizations of Mesoamerica and South America. Next, we will explore the over three-century history of the Spanish and Portuguese American empires. The course will follow a rough chronological track from the 1490s through to the 1820s, and we will focus on major political, economic, and socio-cultural developments. In particular, this class scrutinizes the Spanish and Portuguese conquest and their subsequent consolidations of power, the socio-cultural, political, and economic milieu of the early colonial era of the 1500s and 1600s, the challenges to these two Iberian empires and the resultant reforms of the later colonial era in the 1700s, and finally the independences of the first few decades of the 1800s. This Colonial Latin America survey counts as a non-Western history course.
