World War I from the outbreak of hostilities to the peace settlement. Impact on the combatant nations and subsequent development of the World. Section information text: World War One is the most important military conflict of the twentieth century. Indeed, this war determined the course of European and world history in the twentieth century in ways often misunderstood by Americans, many of whom consider the Second World War more essential. Yet, World War One shattered the century old balance of power Metternich established in 1815 at the Congress of Vienna. It devastated the economic, social, and political structures of Europe. Empires fell and new states were created from the rubble and imperial fragments. The consequences of this war set the stage for communism, fascism, modern liberalism, labor, World War Two, the Cold War, American international preeminence, de-colonization, the United Nations, and even the European Union.
