SPAN 4050: Selected Topics in Spanish: Spanish Critical Linguistics: Language Power and Society

Section information text: This course introduces students to Spanish critical linguistics, an interdisciplinary field that examines how language, power, and society intersect. Students will engage with foundational theoretical and methodological concepts in linguistics and critical perspectives before applying them to the study of linguistic hierarchies in Latin America, including Spanish in contact with sign languages, Indigenous languages, and Creole languages. The course offers a critical examination of linguistic discrimination, analyzing specific cases that illustrate how Spanish speakers construct, perpetuate, or challenge linguistic and social inequalities through language use. Coursework draws on a range of academic materials, including readings, video lectures, and podcasts.
