This course section is reserved for Distance Education campus students, enrolled in the fully online M.S. in Spanish graduate program and requires instructor approval to register. This course has synchronous sessions on Mondays from 5:30 p.m. - 8:15 p.m. Mexico’s traumatic Revolution (1910-1917) attested to stark divisions that had existed in the country for many years. After the dust of war settled, postrevolutionary leaders embarked on a nation-building project to assimilate the country’s diverse (particularly indigenous) population under the umbrella of official mestizaje (or an institutionalized mixed-race identity). This course discusses an array of literary, artistic, and filmic productions that aimed to educate the nation toward a form of Mestizo modernity.
