ENGL 1512: Local Arts/Humanities: Growing Up Southern

Introduction to a range of oral, written, printed, visual, and/or digital texts from local communities and cultures, paying attention especially to language, diverse perspectives, modes of creation, and/or pedagogical approaches. Section information text: THIS IS A FIRST-HALF TERM COURSE. Growing up in the American South often means coming to terms with the rich but complicated heritage of the region. The South has a unique history and culture and also possesses diversities and contradictions that perplex even lifelong inhabitants for the region. This course will provide a multifaceted look at southern culture and growing up in the American South. Through film and literature, we will examine aspects of growing up in the South, focusing particularly on the importance of family and place in shaping individual lives. We will also address such concerns as race, religion, social class, and gender as these things impact coming of age in the South. We will consider the following questions in this “local connections” course: What defines the South? Where is it? Who lives there? Is there just one “Growing Up Southern” experience or many? What traditions, values, and ideas are associated with the South? What myths and stereotypes are associated with the region? What problems and challenges exist?
