ENGL 6104: Major Figures and Themes in Children's Literature

Focuses on significant authors, illustrators, or themes in children's and/or adolescent literature. Section information text: This class will be held in FRET 280C - Conference Room. An examination of selected U.S. Latinx children’s texts (picture books, middle-grade, young adult novels) written between 1997 and 2020, and exploration of migration, assimilation, citizenship, and national belonging in the U.S. We interpret these works as literature intended for the multiple audiences of children’s literature (children, parents, librarians, teachers), and as cultural products that emerge from and shape ongoing conversations about national identity, immigration policy and border crossings. Other possible sub topics include trauma, orphan/migrant child figures, and protagonists' creativity/self-expression.
